Useful Information
A "cookie" is a file that is transferred from a website to your
computer's hard drive. A "cookie" will allow a website to track your
activities on their site and can provide personally identifiable information (such
as your real name and address) if you recorded that information in your computer and have
set your preferences in your browser to provide that information.
For the most part, cookies are harmless and are intend to provide you a
convenience when visiting a web site by recording information that you provide to the site
in a "cookie" on your computer's hard drive. By doing so, the web site can
then retrieve this information from your computer's hard drive the next time you visit,
thus saving you the time and trouble of re-entering the information.
Unfortunately, the "cookie" technology also leaves open the door
for serious abuse and invasion of personal privacy. You may wish to visit various of
the hot links to learn more about the pros and cons
of "cookies".
If you feel the cookie technology is a potential threat to your right to
privacy there are several things you can do to protect yourself:
Verify your security settings in your browser and be sure that your
browser does NOT allow the transmission of personally identifiable information without
your explicit permission.
Set your "warnings" in your browser to "Warn before
accepting cookies".
Consult the manual for your computer's operating system (ie Windows
95/98, Mac, Unix, etc). Most operating systems allow the marking of a file or folder
as readonly. By making your cookie folder readonly you can prevent a web site from
writing information to your hard drive.
